Arlington, TEXAS – Starting the day often means buckling up and driving to work, running errands, or dropping the kids off at school. But various events tied to National Bike Month in May offer the perfect opportunity to leave the car at home and enjoy a nice bike ride.

Bike and Roll to School Day: This national event, happening May 7, encourages students, family members, school staff and community members to walk, bike and roll to school, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

National Bike to Work Week (May 12-18) and Bike to Work Day (May 16): The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) encourages residents to commute by bike or other sustainable transportation modes, for one day or all week, in support of these events initiated by the League of American Bicyclists.

Join other commuters in biking to work and experience the benefits of cycling by participating in Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 16. Dallas Area Rapid Transit will celebrate with giveaways, free snacks and more at the following light rail stations:

  • Akard Station (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) in downtown Dallas

  • Lake June Station (4-6 p.m.) in Dallas

  • Southwestern Medical District/Parkland Station (4-6 p.m.) in Dallas

  • CityLine Bush Station (4-6 p.m.) in Richardson

  • Parker Road Station (4-6 p.m.) in Plano

  • Downtown Irving Station (4-6 p.m.) in Irving

Those unable to commute to work by bike are encouraged to consider combining modes. Maybe they can pedal to a transit stop near their neighborhood. The region’s public transportation providers allow bicycles on their trains and buses.

For others, bicycling for recreation is an option to explore local trails, bike to a nearby coffee shop or restaurant and enjoy the outdoors. The Dallas-Fort Worth region boasts a network of nearly 1,100 miles of existing trails, with significant expansion underway thanks to dedicated funding. These pathways offer ample opportunities to commute, exercise or just enjoy a breezy ride. Discover more about the current and planned bicycle trails across the region on NCTCOG’s DFW Trails webpage.
In urban and suburban areas, designated on-street bikeways such as bike lanes enhance safe and accessible bicycle travel, linking residential areas to workplaces, schools and transportation hubs. For more information, visit NCTCOG’s on-street bikeways webpage.

"The North Central Texas Council of Governments is committed to working with our regional partners to provide cyclists with safe, efficient trails and bikeways as a means of transportation," said Kevin Kokes, program manager for land-use and mobility options at NCTCOG. “Whether exploring a trail for the first time or participating in Bike to Work Day, North Texans are encouraged to be active in May and throughout the year.”

Safety is a top priority for NCTCOG. The Look Out Texans campaign offers 21 tips for cyclists, drivers and pedestrians to ensure everyone stays safe on the roads. Some tips include using hand signals on the road to give notice to drivers when turning or changing lanes, riding as far to the right as possible and always riding in the same direction as traffic. For more bicycling safety tips, visit LookOutTexans.org/Safety-Tips.

NCTCOG invites residents across the region to participate in the Regional Bicycle Safety Survey. This initiative aims to use community input to help develop a plan to enhance safety and bike-friendliness across North Texas. Whether an active bicyclist or not, every response is valuable in shaping projects and policies that improve roadway safety. By completing the survey, participants can enter for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card. The survey takes just 5-10 minutes to complete. Take the survey at PublicInput.com/BikeSafety.

North Texans who participate in Bike to Work Day are encouraged to record their commutes using the free Try Parking It app, available for download on Apple and Android devices.
